AGENCY BACKGROUND:
MercyFirst is a not-for-profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since we were founded by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. Each year, MercyFirst serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families overcome enormous obstacles, re-imagine their futures and develop their full potential.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND:
The children in our START with Hope program are in the U.S. as children whose parents/guardians are not physically with them. Many of our children have fled dangerous and violent situations in their own home countries, including but not limited to Central and South America. Most of our children have suffered devastating losses through trauma, violence, abandonment, poverty, substance abuses, or abuse. The children’s safety, nutritional, medical, emotional health and education are our top priorities.
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Nurse Supervisor, the Medical Assistant will assist the medical team in providing safe and knowledgeable medical assistance for youth in foster care and in residential settings. Responsible for general clerical tasks within the Medical Program as assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR) requires all candidates and employees to show proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with children, including Varicella, MMK (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) DTaP or DTap, and Influenza.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record for most positions.
- Minimum 1 year's related experience required.
- Bilingual Spanish required.
- Knowledge of infection control. Good organizational skills, ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Microsoft word, electronic health records and medical terminology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct all work with good faith and compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain good attendance and report to work on time.
- Complete attendance records accurately.
- Safeguard confidential information.
- Successfully complete minimum training requirements.
- Communicate accurate information in a timely manner to supervisors.
- Accurately complete job-related documentation in a timely manner.
- Communicate in a professional manner to children, families, peers, outside agencies/vendors.

- Take vital signs.
- Triage patients.
- Obtain certain lab specimens.
- Administer hearing and vision tests.
- Perform infection control inspections for exams rooms between patients and after clinic.
- Instruct staff on proper infection control techniques.
- Organize supplies and stock exam rooms with necessary items.
- Perform EKG tests as ordered by physician.
- Electronic Health Record-Data entry responsibilities.
- Specialty Care Referrals and outreach to obtain medical findings/records from external provider.
- Dental Referrals.
- Track and process invoices for payment with the Fiscal department.
- Document observations and activities.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for clients.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and staff.
- Data entry.
- Answering phone calls and emails.
- Communicate and respond effectively, professionally, and timely via phone calls and email correspondence.
- Communicate emergency information to Medical Provider/Director or supervisor in a timely manner.
- Assist with special projects.
- Schedule appointments.
- Request medical records.
- Conduct medical and program supply inventories.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Follow all MercyFirst’s established policies and procedures.
- Understanding and willingness to commit to the Agency’s Mission, core values, Sanctuary commitments, and DEIB principles.

Salary Range:
$20.00 - $23.00/hr.
Hiring bonus of $1,000 after 500 worked hours.
