AGENCY BACKGROUND:

MercyFirst is a not-for-profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since we were founded by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. Each year, MercyFirst serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families overcome enormous obstacles, re-imagine their futures, and develop their full potential.
 

PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

The children in our START with Hope program are in the U.S. as children whose parents/guardians are not physically with them. Our unique program is a residential treatment for unaccompanied minors. Many of our children have had to flee dangerous and violent situations in their own home countries and many are from Central and South America. Almost all of our children have suffered devastating loss through trauma, violence, abandonment, poverty, substance abuses, or abuse. We are seeking a caring, experienced Clinicians to work with our youth as they recover from trauma.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the education of the unaccompanied children in the START program.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree; Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must have or be in the process of obtaining teaching certification. Preferred: Bi-lingual English and Spanish, with proficiency in speaking and writing in both languages; experience working with special needs students also preferred but no required.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for conducting individual and small group academic evaluations for students placed in the program within specific timeframes
  • Main responsibilities will include, developing and carrying out individualized courses of study according to curriculum guidelines, school district and state requirements, preparing assignments, tests, and homework based on the individual needs of the students in the program, and maintaining records of the student academic performance, attendance, and behaviors during the school day
  • Participating in monthly staff meetings ,Red Flag meetings, 30- day treatment team meetings, and/or family visits if needed
  • Updating the Teachers Program Manual annually

Salary Range:
$55,000-$60,000 per year

$1500 Hiring Incentive after 500 completed work hours
