AGENCY BACKGROUND:

MercyFirst is a not-for-profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since we were founded by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. Each year, MercyFirst serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families overcome enormous obstacles, re-imagine their futures and develop their full potential.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

The Behavior Health Department provides mental health services to children aged 3 to 21 that have been placed in MercyFirst care. Children placed in care are more likely than not to be exposed to adverse childhood experiences and traumatic stress, the Behavior Health Department takes a strength-based, trauma-informed child centered approach to service delivery.


SUMMARY:

Clinicians provide trauma-informed, evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy services to youth in residential care and/or in foster care. They carry a caseload of 15 to 20 youths. Responsibilities include (but is not limited to) clinical progress notes, treatment planning, discharge planning, attending meetings and collaborating interdepartmentally and with external partners. Reports to the Clinical Director.
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in a mental health field with an LMSW, MHC, LP, LMHC, LCSW. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Experience in the assessment and treatment of children and families. Knowledge of youth developmental stages and family dynamics.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct all work with good faith in compliance of all legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Complete attendance records accurately.
  • Safeguard confidential information.
  • Successfully complete minimum training requirements.
  • Communicate accurate information in a timely manner to supervisors.
  • Accurately complete job-related documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicate in a professional manner to children, families, peers, outsides agencies/vendors.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to take on new responsibilities and alter performance with changing needs.
  • Continually seek to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their department and the agency.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for clients.
  • Use accepted techniques of assessment and intervention demonstrating competency in trauma treatment.
  • Assist in psychiatric hospitalizations.
  • Provide clinical insight to treatment teams and provide clinical input into treatment planning.
  • Prepare progress notes.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments including Health Office, Foster Care, Residential Care, Care Management, AODs, etc.
  • Adhere to Mandated Reporter rules and regulations.
  • De-escalate emotional and/or physical outbursts using therapeutic crisis intervention.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with co-workers and clients.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Follow all MercyFirst’s established policies and procedures.
  • Understanding and willingness to commit to the Agency’s Mission, core values, Sanctuary commitments, and DEIB principles.

Salary Range:
$56,000 - $65,000 per year
Hiring bonus of $1,500 after 500 worked hours.
